Farewell Reception for Dr. Helene Sanko

Dr. Hélène N. Sanko will be retiring at the end of this semester. Members of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Cultures would like to invite members of the John Carroll Community to stop by and wish her well on her retirement at a reception to be held the last regular Friday of the semester, April 29 from 3-5 p.m. in O’Malley Center OC 112. Everyone is invited, including present and former students.

Dr. Sanko’s career at JCU spans over 54 years and began in 1962 at a time when the university was still an all-male institution. Her degrees include an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Case-Western Reserve University; Licence ès lettres modernes: Certificat de Philologie, Phonétique (Pierre Fouché) et Lettres Etrangères (Russe), Université de Paris (Sorbonne); Diplôme d’Ukrainien et de Russe, Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, Paris. Her areas of expertise include all levels of French and Francophone Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries and Twentieth Century literature from France and Francophone countries; French art; French for business; Francophone Africa; and Franco-Italian Relations.
Her most recent articles demonstrate that she is truly a “Renaissance Woman” and have been published in major journals such as Papers on French Seventeenth Century Literature (on French gardens in pre-modern France); the French Review (on Martinique and author Françoise Ega); the Association pour la recherche francophone, Commission Amérique (on Langston Hughes in Paris); and Romance Languages Annual (on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Evangeline” and the plight of French Canadians ejected from Nova Scotia who eventually became the Cajuns of Louisiana).

Please stop by to offer your best wishes to our good friend and colleague, teacher, author, and advisor as she embarks on a new chapter in her life.

Thank you, Dr. Sanko! We will miss you!
