Reminder: Bohannon Site Restoration and Hamlin Quad Enhancement Project

From Jonathan Smith, Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President

Last summer we removed the temporary lot and restored Hamlin Quad, and we are building on that momentum with the Bohannon project to make the campus more attractive and functional. The demolition and construction work will require some changes to traffic flow and parking on campus (details outlined below).

Purpose of Bohannon Project:

This summer, the Hamlin Quad will be enhanced to support more student activity, and additional parking will be created on the Bohannon footprint. This three-phase project is scheduled to begin at the end of June. As part of the project, we will:

• Demolish Bohannon and re-grade the site and adjacent Hamlin Quad areas.
• Create a parking area with rain gardens and a bio-retention basin.
• Install drains and add natural turf to create an athletic field on Hamlin Quad.

A construction area will be established from the Dolan Science Center East Lot to Administration Drive. It will run from Carroll Blvd. across Hamlin Quad to the sidewalk in front of Grasselli Library. The construction entrance will be located on Carroll Blvd., west of the Bohannon site.

Campus Access 6/27–8/15:

The North Park and South Belvoir entrances will remain open during construction. A portion of Main Drive, adjacent to Bohannon, will be closed from 6/27–8/15. Main Drive will reopen before students return to campus for fall classes. Administration Drive will remain open. In the event that Administration Drive needs to briefly close, the campus community will be notified. The North Park entrance will remain open 24 hours a day until further notice.

Access to the Dolan Center and campus buildings accessible from Auxiliary Drive (Grasselli Library, O’Malley Center, Rodman, Sutowski, Dolan, and Murphy) will be through the North Park entrance.
Access to the RecPlex, Millor, Bernet, Pacelli, and the School of Business lot will be through the South Belvoir entrance. Closure of Main Drive at Administration Drive and one-way traffic (southbound) on Administration Drive, will prevent access to the front of campus from the South Belvoir entrance.

The sidewalk in front of the library, from Administration Drive to the Dolan Center, will remain open.

Normal campus traffic patterns will be restored after 8/16.

Parking:

As with last year’s removal of the temporary lot, planning for campus parking is required. For the fall, some residential junior and senior parking will move to Target and the shuttle route will be adjusted accordingly. Ample parking should be available during the construction process; however, the Target lot and shuttle will also be available to FSA’s and visitors, if unanticipated situations arise. When completed, the project will create 334 parking spaces.

A 2011 Parking/Traffic Map of the traffic patterns and updated campus access information can be downloaded in this PDF file.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns. Our thanks to the generous supporters of the University who have made these enhancements possible. Also, thank you for your patience as we make these improvements that will benefit the entire campus community.
