There will be a new page of the Saint John’s Bible, which is on permanent exhibit in the Tully Atrium of the Grasselli Library, on display beginning this week.
The page depicts the death of Moses. The illumination illustrates Moses holding the Ten Commandments as he looks longingly at the Promised Land, which is depicted in bright, rainbow-like colors. As told in Exodus, Moses cannot emerge from the dark to enter the Promised Land because he has committed an offense against God. However, the filaments of gold above his head and the halo that surrounds him show that God is still with him. This image captures the deep pain of the exile of the Israelites as well as the bright promise of their future in their own land, but Moses will not experience it.
