Juniors and seniors majoring in communications or political science and interested in applying for the NBC/John Carroll University Meet the Press Fellowship are invited to attend the first-ever Meet the Press Fellowship workshop on Tuesday, February 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Dolan A202-203. Joe Toohey ’10, former Fellowship recipient, will serve as the primary speaker.
Toohey, whose Fellowship developed into a full-time paid position as a researcher with Meet the Press, will provide tips on preparing a competitive application for the Fellowship. A videoconference with Andrew Rafferty ’09, the inaugural Fellowship recipient and current NBC News campaign embed reporter, is also tentatively scheduled. Rafferty is assigned to cover Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, and will join the workshop to share his experiences if his schedule permits.
The NBC/John Carroll University Meet the Press Fellowship will be awarded to a John Carroll University graduating senior motivated to pursue a career in political journalism. The Fellowship is a nine-month (September–May) position at Meet the Press. NBC and John Carroll University created the Fellowship in honor of John Carroll alumnus, Timothy J. Russert ’72. Russert was an American icon and one of the most trusted figures in the media. As Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief for NBC News since 1991, Russert was a magnetic presence as the Managing Editor and Moderator of Meet the Press, the longest running, most popular, and most influential of the Sunday morning political talk shows.
The Fellowship will afford the John Carroll University graduate the opportunity to experience first-hand the workings of producing a weekly program of this caliber and contribute to its continued success. The fellow will be exposed to the roles of researcher, editor, reporter, producer, and correspondent.
There is no cost to attend this workshop. A complimentary lunch will be provided. R.S.V.P. to blovequist@jcu.edu if you plan to stay for lunch.
If you have questions about the workshop, please email Lauren Bowen, Ph.D., at bowen@jcu.edu.
