Service through tax preparation

Are you a business or accounting major? Or, do you just like crunching numbers?

The federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps low to moderate income individuals and families prepare their income tax returns without paying fees to professional preparers. The VITA program focuses on recruiting low wage workers, particularly those in families with children, who may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a major way to help alleviate poverty among greater Clevelanders.

This year JCU will again team with the Cuyahoga County EITC Coalition in providing volunteers. We will work with the Famicos Foundation using their computer lab on Ansel Road in Cleveland. We likely will be involved on some if not all of these Saturdays in 2013: February 16 and 23, March 16 and 23, and April 13. You may also volunteer independently to assist at any of the Coalition’s preparation locations.

In order to participate, volunteers must attend a training and pass an online test at the “basic/beginner” level. If you are comfortable preparing your own taxes, this opportunity is for you! Please contact Ted Steiner for more information at
