Important ITS upgrade announcement

Happy New Year and welcome back!

This weekend the Information Technology Services (ITS) Department will be performing three important upgrades. With the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, we have a three day window to perform these upgrades with minimal impact on the campus.

On Friday evening, Jan. 18, beginning at 6 p.m., a necessary equipment upgrade to continue the highly successful desktop virtualization project involving the classroom and lab computers will take place. The following services will be shut down for a hardware upgrade: Blackboard, on-campus printing, classroom applications, and any website still hosted on campus. This upgrade should take approximately three hours with all services restored in the vicinity of 9 p.m.

Also on Friday evening, Jan. 18, beginning at 6 p.m., the campus Internet connection will be reconfigured to add a second link which follows a new route to campus and is delivered by a different Internet provider. This second path doubles the reliability of our campus Internet service and allows for much greater future bandwidth growth. Brief Internet outages will occur while this work is performed with all services being restored by 9 p.m.

On Sunday, Jan. 20,  the Oracle database, which runs Banner, will be upgraded  and  new features added. This upgrade is expected to take the majority of the day, during which time Banner will be unavailable. Faculty, staff, and administrators should notice a new icon on their computer desktop when they return to the office on Tuesday. This new icon will automatically link to the new upgraded version of the database.
