Today: Presentation by Andrew Delbanco – “College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be”

Andrew Delbanco, the Mendelson Family Chair of American Studies and the Julian Clarence Levi Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University, will give a public presentation on Thursday, April 11, at 5 p.m. in the Donahue Auditorium of the Dolan Science Center based on his recent award-winning book, “College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be.” His visit, part of the campus Celebration of Scholarship, is sponsored by the Provost’s Office.

Professor Delbanco was awarded the 2011 National Humanities Medal by President Obama “for his writing that spans the literature of Melville and Emerson to contemporary issues in higher education.” In 2001 he was elected a Fellow of the American Academic of Arts and Sciences and in 2006 he received the “Great Teacher Award” from the Society of Columbia Graduates. In addition to his scholarly writing on Melville and Emerson, Delbanco has also published more generally on the Puritans and the Abolitionists and is the editor of “The Portable Abraham Lincoln.” He is a frequent commentator on contemporary higher education, and he is or has been a trustee of the Library of America, the Teagle Foundation, the National Humanities Center, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
