Today: Bystander Intervention Workshop

Have you ever witnessed an act of bias, wanted to intervene, but could not think of what to do in the moment? Unfortunately, this is the experience of too many people, causing pain for those witnessing and/or facing bias as a result of bias on the basis of race, age, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic or national origin, disability or veteran status. It is important as a University that we stand up to bias. To learn techniques to intervene in these situations, the Diversity Steering Committee would like to invite you to join us for a bystander intervention workshop.

Facilitated by Danielle Carter, director of the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, and Amanda Rolf, program coordinator of the Violence Prevention and Action Center, the workshop will cover:

  • Identifying acts of bias in which intervention is possible and needed.
  • Techniques on how to effectively respond to acts of bias.
  • Examining case studies and brainstorming additional ideas on how to respond.
  • Resources and reporting options for yourself and / or the target of the act of bias.

The workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 3:30–5 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 7, from noon–1:30 p.m. in the Jardine Room (please note location change).
