Celebrate the Spirit – Tuesday, Sept. 9

A rich aspect of the Jesuit tradition is to inaugurate each academic year with a Mass of the Holy Spirit, an occasion for convening the community for the purpose of a shared, spiritual celebration of the challenging semesters ahead. This celebration takes place at Jesuit high school, college, and university campuses across the United States, as well as at numerous other Catholic and Jesuit educational institutions worldwide. While the John Carroll community represents many faith traditions, this celebration unites us in one communal quest for the gift of wisdom and compassion for our faculty, staff, and students.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the John Carroll University Community will celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at noon at the Church of the Gesu (across the street from Rodman Hall). Rev. Robert Niehoff, S.J., president of John Carroll, will be the presider and Rev. Martin Collins, S.J., will be the homilist for this Mass.

Following the Mass we will celebrate the opening of Murphy Hall with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate. While no classes that day will be canceled, the schedule will be abbreviated so as to create a free period lasting from noon to 2:30 p.m. You can get the full schedule here.

There will also be a luncheon for the entire community. Seating will be in the Schott Dining Hall and in the LSC and Murphy Rooms. Take-out containers will be available at all food stations. There will be limited outside seating, weather permitting.

Food service at other locations around campus will be otherwise limited. The hours of operation for Dining Services on Tuesday, Sept. 9, due to Mass of the Holy Spirit, are as follows:

  • The Schott Dining Hall is open from 7-10 a.m., then closed until 12:15 p.m. Lunch is served from 12:15-2:30 p.m. and will re-open at 4:30 p.m.
  • Einstein’s and Java City Grasselli will be open during their regular hours of operation.
  • The Inn-Between will be open at 2 p.m.

Recreational facilities will be closed between noon and 1 p.m. in order to allow all students, faculty, staff and administrators to participate in this celebration.

Atrium display: Our students come from 37 countries around the world. The International flags of our students will be displayed in the atrium week of September 8-12.
