Because of Jim Crow laws, many black sharecroppers and tenant farmers fell deeply into debt or lost everything. Between 1915 and 1920 as many as one million African Americans moved to northern cities in search of jobs. Nearly another million joined them in the decade that followed. This era is known as the Great Migration.
