Today: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis

The sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis on July 29, 1945, was the Navy’s worst disaster at sea of the Second World War. Of the more than 800 sailors that went into the water after the Japanese torpedoes struck, only 317 survived the five-day ordeal. The sailors in the water gradually succumbed to burns, dehydration, exhaustion, injuries and shark attacks. World War II veteran and Indianapolis survivor Dick Thelen will recount his service experiences on Wednesday, November 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the LSC Conference Room.
