Beyond the Classroom: Announcing Philosophy FLUNCH (Faculty + Lunch)

Get to know your philosophy professors beyond the classroom by taking them out to FLUNCH (Faculty + Lunch). The Shula Chair in Philosophy is pleased to offer students the opportunity to invite their philosophy professors to lunch as a way to encourage interaction outside the classroom and to help build lasting relationships with their Philosophy professors.

Students do not need to be majors or minors in philosophy, and they do not need to be currently enrolled in a philosophy course in order to be eligible to take advantage of this opportunity. However, the FLUNCH program is for lunch with philosophy faculty only.

FLUNCH allows students to invite philosophy faculty to dine with them at any eatery on- or off-campus. The FLUNCH program is only for lunch (between the hours of 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday). Each student is permitted to host a total of two FLUNCHes per semester (with a cap of $100 per semester). The FLUNCH program does not cover alcohol purchases.

FLUNCHes for the Fall 2016 semester can take place anytime between now and Friday, December 16, 2016. The FLUNCH program will begin again with the start of the Spring 2017 semester.

How to FLUNCH:

1. Invite your professor to FLUNCH and decide on a mutually convenient time and location. Note that FLUNCHes can only be held between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If more than one student will be at the same FLUNCH, only one student needs to submit a request on behalf of the whole group. The FLUNCH will count towards that one “host” student’s FLUNCH allotment for the semester.

2. Please send an email message to Professor Michael Eng, Shula Chair in Philosophy (meng@jcu.edu) with the following information: Your name and Banner ID; the name of the philosophy professor you have invited to lunch, and; where you will be going to lunch. Professor Eng will confirm with your professor and respond to you via email, and, assuming your FLUNCH request meets all requirements, grant approval for your FLUNCH appointment.

You should submit your FLUNCH request at least three business days before you plan to hold your FLUNCH. Note that it is not always possible to approve a FLUNCH request submitted one day before or the same day as the date the FLUNCH will be held.

3. Once approved, you and your professor will receive more detailed information on how the cost of your FLUNCH will be covered.
