Today: Advising and Supporting Students in Humanities and Social Sciences, 3/19 & 3/26

The Office for Academic Advising and the Center for Teaching and Learning in partnership with the Associate Deans for the Humanities and for Social Sciences, Education, and Global Studies are sponsoring a 2-day workshop on advising and supporting students interested in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Advising and Supporting Students in Humanities and Social Sciences,

Part 1: Orientation and First Year Advising.

Monday 3/19, 12:00-1:00, O’ Connell Reading Room, Charles and Helen Dolan Center for Science and Technology

Orientation and the first year are two very important stages in the life of students. How can we help students decide early the combination of major(s), minor(s), and extracurricular activities that allow them to achieve meaningful careers in H/SS? Join Medora Barnes, Gwen Compton-Engle, Angie Jones, Dan Kilbride, and Colin Swearingen to discuss strategies for helping students setting their way towards their goals in H/SS.

Advising and Supporting Students in Humanities and Social Sciences,

Part 2: Making H/SS Majors/Minors More Attractive to Today’s Students

Monday 3/26, 12:00-1:00, O’ Connell Reading Room, Charles and Helen Dolan Center for Science and Technology

How can we make H/SS programs more attractive to freshmen? How can we make them a meaningful experience for students who failed business or STEM majors? What additional skills may be important to H/SS majors looking for a job after graduation? Join Richard Clark, Margaret Finucane, Philip Metres, and Logan Vess to discuss how to provide more opportunities to H/SSstudents.

Lunch will be provided in both events. Please RSVP to Kathryn Gilway (kgilway@jcu.edu) to let us know if you plan to attend.

We also set up a Canvas course where you can find additional material (look in Modules). You should have received an invitation to join the course and you are welcome to add articles, data, and website links to the material in the course.
