A play about the day when the National Guard fired on Kent State students protesting the escalation of the war in Vietnam, killing 4 and wounding 9. Using statements from the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project, Hassler’s play portrays the thoughts of students, local residents, National Guardsmen, the police, hospital personnel and others whose lives were forever affected by the events on May 4, 1970. The play asks: Is compassion possible amid such great sorrow and anger? It is especially resonant in our own time of violence and anger. The playwright and others will lead a post-show discussion on Thursday, April 12, followed by a reception.
