Today: Join Us: Trans Day of Remembrance

Help us honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence this year. Participate in Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) by attending JCU’s observation on Tuesday, November 27, at 4:30 p.m. next to the Saint Francis Chapel (near the University Bookstore).

This vigil will feature a reading of names, a resource table to raise your awareness/knowledge of local/national/international trans issues, and action steps you can take to build a better community for our students, staff, and faculty who identify as trans. Light refreshments will be served after the vigil.

TDOR was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor her memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Please email srodezno@jcu.edu with any questions or accommodation requests. Let us also know if you would like to help us read names on the day of the event.

TDOR is a collaborative event sponsored by Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies; Biology Department; Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion; Campus Ministry; Student Union; LGBTQIA+ Allies; Q@JCU; and Grasselli Library.
