Safe Zone training at JCU began in 2011 after a series of identity-based student suicides occurred across American colleges and universities. Safe Zone training aimed to build a community of visible allies whose support is comprehensive, evidence-based, and trauma-informed. Safe Zone training aims to increase the visible presence of LGBTQ+ allies and places that are ‘safe’ for LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty across campus. “Safe” to the program is the use of evidence-based and trauma-informed content to provide comprehensive support to all who seek resources regarding sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and/or gender identity expression. Participants receive a “Safe Zone” sticker after completing the training. NOTE: training will be offered twice and those interested only need to attend ONE of the sessions, not both.
