The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion invites you to attend any of the following free virtual events or self-guided enrichment opportunities.

Undergraduate and Graduate students who participate in any of the following events are encouraged to write a 500 word, single-spaced reflection on their experience(s). Students must email their reflection to csdi@jcu.edu by Monday, January 25, 2021 to be entered to receive JCU swag and other social justice themed prizes. Make sure that your reflection has your full name, major, and contact information (email, phone).

Description: The event will showcase Dr. King’s work, the history of how the national holiday came to be, as well as how the museum has celebrated the holiday in years past. The online celebration by the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel will feature musical performances by Memphis musicians Garry Goin, TykeT, Karen Brown, Adajyo and many more. Dr. Hasan Jeffries, Associate Professor at Ohio State University and editor of Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, will give scholarly insight on Dr. King’s life and legacy. For young viewers, museum educator Dory Lerner will share a “Small But Mighty Storytime” reading of the book My Uncle Martin’s Big Heart written by Angela Farris Watkins. In the Orchestra’s 41st year of offering music to celebrate and reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King, it will provide a variety of ways for guests to honor him in the safety of their homes from January 14 through early February.
