This month, JCU joins the Greater Cleveland community of library patrons for the WKYC Community Read of Heather McGhee’s 2021 New York Times bestseller, “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together.”
During the Community Read, the Cuyahoga County Public Library is making the ebook (and e-audiobook) available for multiple patrons’ simultaneous use through its Overdrive digital lending library. Anyone with a Cuyahoga County Public Library card can participate!
ALL members of the JCU community (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends) are invited to participate in the Community Read by borrowing the book from the Cuyahoga County Public Library website (https://www.cuyahogalibrary.org/Events/Book-Club.aspx) and joining us via Zoom to discuss the book as a community.
We will meet on three subsequent Thursdays during the lunch hour to discuss this book:
Feb. 24, 12-1 pm: Chapters 1-3: “An Old Story: The Zero-Sum Hierarchy;” “Racism Drained the Pool;” and “Going Without”
Mar. 3, 12-1 pm: Chapters 4-7: “Ignoring the Canary;” “No One Fights Alone;” “Never a Real Democracy;” and “Living Apart”
Mar. 10, 12-1 pm: Chapters 8-10: “The Same Sky;” “The Hidden Wound;” and “The Solidarity Dividend.”
Please feel free to bring your lunch and eat with us as we discuss the book!
