Apply To Be A Peer Mentor To New International Students Next Year

The Soft Landings Peer Mentor Program assigns upperclass JCU students to new international freshmen, or mentees, for the purpose of helping the mentee make a smooth transition to campus. The peer mentor acts like an older sibling to the mentee, answering question and offering guidance on topics ranging from winter clothing needs to campus clubs. Each peer mentor is assigned three to four mentees.

This is a paid campus position that reports to the assistant director of international services in the Office of Admission. Mentors work an average of seven hours per week during the academic year: five hours working with mentees, one hour attending a mentor meeting, and one hour completing check-in notes.

To be considered, an applicant must:

  • Have a minimum of one year/ two semester experience living in a country different from the country he/she calls home.
  • Be in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Be able to attend all of Peer Mentor orientation on Friday, August 11, and Saturday, August 21, 2017, and New International Student Arrival and Orientation Week from Monday, August 14, until Sunday, August 20, 2017.
