JCU IRB Needs Members

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for vetting all research at JCU involving human subjects. We also work hand in hand with the Office of Sponsored Research, the support and compliance body for JCU faculty seeking funding from external sources. We are seeking faculty to serve on IRB. Members of all Departments are welcome!

What would my responsibilities be?
1. Review IRB submissions, considering ethics as well as applying federal and state guidelines relating to human subjects research. These submissions are all online and can be viewed from your computer. They are also pre-viewed by IRB staff who only let projects go forward when they are ready for review.
2. Stay up-to-date on the major rules regarding human subject research. Again, staff attend workshops and stay up-to-date, then help faculty to be aware of changes.
3. Advocate for sponsored research at JCU in a way that makes sense given your position and strengths. This is a new goal and we are flexible and open to suggestions on this point.
4. Support students at JCU in gaining valuable research skills and experience designing and executing ethical and legal research.

What do I get for serving on IRB?
1. Great conversations with interesting colleagues on a range of topics
2. Networking and relationship building across disciplines that can lead to inter-disciplinary projects
3. Greater familiarity with sponsored research and ethical research.
