This classic by Werner Sollors explores important questions about how and why Americans embrace birth-right identities (Italian, Irish, African, etc.) in a country that has characteristically embraced the ideal of the self-made man. We will have the opportunity to discuss, what, if anything is essential about particular cultures. Is ethnicity, as Judith Butler says of gender, primarily performed? Or are there deep currents of culture that genuinely differentiate some Americans from others (and are these worth preserving)?
