The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion and colleagues from the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host two virtual Affinity Spaces this week to continue and deepen our community conversations about the impact of race and racism in the realities we are experiencing right now, on us as individuals, and on JCU as an institution.
When: Friday 6/12/2020, 3:00-4:00 pm
Where: Zoom
Who: open to all current students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
To register: https://forms.gle/DPF4XNjRFmnwAPLF7
Affinity Spaces are important for community engagement and identity formation. This week’s Affinity Spaces are based on racial identity. They aim to continue the conversation of the CSDI community meeting on 6/3/2020. (If you did not attend that meeting, you are still welcome to join us in this week’s Affinity Spaces.) Registration requested.
This Friday we will have two affinity spaces available. Discussions will be facilitated by members of the DEI Division staff.
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC): a space for Black, Indigenous and People of Color to connect, support, and unpack during this difficult time as we build resilience and hope.
Aspiring Anti-Racist White Allies: a space for white people seeking to examine how race, racism, and white supremacy are active in our current context and to discuss how we can work to interrupt it in ourselves and in the world.
All are welcome to participate in the affinity space that best reflects their racial identity. For example, Salo identifies as Latinx, Megan identifies as White, and Carly identifies as Multiracial. Salo can attend the BIPOC space but not the Aspiring Anti-Racist White Allies space. Megan can attend the Anti-Racist White Allies space but not the BIPOC space. Carly can attend whichever affinity space they feel best addresses their needs right now.
Email CSDI@jcu.edu for more information.
Looking forward to seeing you on Friday!
