Last semester, nineteen students participated in the first the Inside-Out Prison Exchange course sponsored by John Carroll University and the Northeast Reintegration Center, a women’s prison in Cleveland. The purpose of the program is to facilitate dialogue across differences. It does this by bringing together campus-based students with incarcerated students for a semester-long course of study in a prison, jail or other correctional setting. Since 1997, Inside-Out courses have been taught at hundreds of institutions in the United States as well as in multiple foreign countries. As a part of this Voices of Inclusion speaker series, participants and instructors from the first class cohort will report upon their experiences being a member of this unique learning community. We will also bring the voices of our ‘inside students,’ women incarcerated in the NeRC facility, by highlighting writings they completed as a part of the course and wished to share with the larger John Carroll Community.
