Journalism Amid the Ruins: Spotlight on Gaza
A Talk by Samer Badawi
November 19th at 7pm Donahue Auditorium
Unlike previous wars it has waged on Gaza, Israel has barred all outside journalists from reporting on the ground. This reduces external coverage of the war’s human cost to a roster of dead and injured, a series of digits reported in the aggregate—and always with the compulsory footnote, “according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health.” With so many caveats, what does “objective” coverage of Gaza look like? And where can people of conscience turn for ideas on how to help end the slaughter?
Samer Badawi is a Palestinian-American journalist and contributor to The Progressive and +972 Magazine. For +972, he covered Israel’s “Operation Protective Edge” from Gaza in the summer of 2014. A former DC correspondent for Middle East International, he also served as Executive Director of United Palestinian Appeal.
