Today: Contemporary Counterterrorism and Just War

On April 7 and 8, the Tuohy Chair in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies is sponsoring a workshop on the challenges to just war theory posed by contemporary terrorism. The animating concern for the workshop, which Paul J. Lauritzen, Ph.D., is co-convening with Amos Guiora, the co-director of the Center for Global Justice, S.J. Quinney College of Law – University of Utah, is the need to provide a framework for developing counterterrorism practices and policies that are morally defensible.

The Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies presents Rabbi Reuven Firestone, Ph.D., professor of Medieval Judaism and Islam at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a senior fellow at the University of Southern California Center for Religion and Civic Culture. Rabbi Firestone’s lecture will be titled “Abraham: The First Jew? Christian? Muslim?” and will take place on Sunday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Donahue Auditorium.

R.I.C.E. (Realizing your Love for Cultures of the East) is holding their first event of the semester this Saturday, April 5, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Muldoon Atrium of the Dolan Science Center. There will be free food, including authentic dishes and sushi. There will be activities such as calligraphy, origami, door raffles, a K-pop/J-pop dance group and more.
